The main difference between facial hair (often referred to as ‘peach fuzz’) and the typical hair on a woman’s body is the texture, as body hair tends to be coarse. Excessive or unwanted hair that grows on a woman’s face can often be caused by hormones. Although it isn’t dangerous to have excess facial hair, the hormonal imbalance that could be the cause could potentially compromise a woman’s health.
A term that is used for this excess growth, particularly for excess growth that is coarse, is Hirsutism. Hirsutism is excess hair in areas where it’s typically seen in men, such as the face and lower abdomen, and this differs from another term which is Hypertrichosis, in which hair can increase anywhere on the body.
Hirsutism affects between 5 and 10 percent of women, and tends to run in families, so you may be more likely to have unwanted hair growth if another female relative has it. Women of Mediterranean, South Asian, and Middle Eastern heritage are more likely to develop the condition.
Those with Cushing’s disease have higher-than-normal levels of cortisol. Cortisol is sometimes called the “stress hormone.” All of these conditions can affect the way your body produces androgens. Excessive body or facial hair growth can also result from taking any of the following medications;
In some cases, women may experience idiopathic hirsutism, which means that there’s no detectable cause for why the hirsutism developed. It’s usually chronic and may be harder to treat. Women can develop facial hair due to higher-than-normal levels of androgens, including testosterone. All females produce androgens, but the levels typically remain low, and it can be certain medical conditions that can cause a woman to produce too many androgens. This can cause male-pattern hair growth and even other male characteristics, such as a deep voice.
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is one common cause of Hirsutism. These benign cysts form on the ovaries and can affect hormone production, leading to irregular menstrual cycles and decreased fertility. Other forms of hormonal imbalance that cause excessive hair growth include these adrenal gland disorders;
The adrenal glands, located just above your kidneys, are responsible for hormone production. People with congenital adrenal hyperplasia are born without an enzyme that’s necessary for hormone production.
