The combined pill (commonly known as ‘the pill’) is the most common type of contraceptive pill, containing both progestogen and oestrogen. This pill gives you regular periods, reduces period pain and the heaviness of your period and can even relieve premenstrual symptoms.
It’s vital you keep in mind that the combined pill must be taken at the same time daily to ensure you’re protected. Most combined pills are taken for 21 days, followed by a 7-day break, or 7 days of inactive pills that contain no hormones. It’s likely that, during the 7-day break, you’ll have a period, however some women prefer to miss or shorten the break if they experience heavy or painful bleeding, headaches, or mood swings on pill-free days.

The progestogen-only pill/mini pill, is a progestogen, no-oestrogen pill which is why it’s called the progestogen-only pill. This pill is suitable for women who cannot medically take the combined pill and can be taken if you are breastfeeding, over 40-years-old, have high blood pressure, are overweight, have severe migraines or are over 35-years-old and smoke. Mini pills must be taken at the same time every day, so we would advise setting an alarm to help you remember.
Side effects vary by pill, with many women trying a few before finding one that suits them. Some women experience a rise in blood pressure when taking oestrogen. To ensure it’s safe to take, you must discuss with one of our pharmacists and your GP as your height, weight and blood pressure will need to be checked.
The low-dose pill contains both progesterone and oestrogen, but a smaller amount of oestrogen than in a regular combined pill, meaning some side effects are lessened.
Like the mini pill, you must take this pill at the same time daily to ensure you’re protected. Most low-dose pills are taken for 21 days, followed by a 7-day break.
